Timing for 31 October

Halloween night is one of the busiest evenings of the year for makeup artists in the city. A few rules help:

• Book early. Evening slots on 30 and 31 October go first. Booking a week ahead is safe. Booking on the day is a gamble.
• Plan 60 to 90 minutes per person for makeup and hair. A group of three needs about four hours with one artist, less if a second artist joins.
• Start in the late afternoon. Most clients want to leave between 19:00 and 21:00, so plan backwards from that time.
• Costume on last. Wear a button-up shirt during makeup, then change.

How to make it last until 2am

• Ask Kay for the lip shade she used and carry it with you. Liner plus long-wear lipstick lasts longest.
• Blot, do not wipe. Oil paper keeps the base clean without lifting it.
• Avoid rubbing your eyes if you wear lashes and gems.
• Hair spray in the room, not on the street. Humidity is the enemy of curls in Saigon.
• Remove gems and lashes gently with oil-based cleanser at the end of the night.
