Elopement Hair and Makeup in Saigon, A Planning Guide
More couples now skip the 150-guest wedding and fly somewhere that means something to them. Just the two of them, a photographer, maybe a few words read out loud. Saigon works well for this. The city has French-era buildings, rooftop views, quiet riverside mornings and green lanes an hour out of town, and you can do all of it in one day without a wedding planner.
This guide covers when to come, how to plan the day around the light and the heat, and how hair and makeup fits in. It is written by KINKAY, a makeup and hair atelier in Ho Chi Minh City run by Kay, who works with English-speaking clients and has done backstage work for national and international pageants.
Elopement, vow renewal or couple shoot?
People use these words differently, so here is how we use them:
- Elopement: a small ceremony with just the two of you (sometimes a few friends), followed by photos.
- Vow renewal: the same thing for couples who are already married, often on an anniversary trip.
- Couple or pre-wedding shoot: photos only, no ceremony.
For hair and makeup the difference is small. What matters is how long the day is and whether you want Kay to stay with you.
A practical note: a legal marriage in Vietnam involving a foreign partner is an official paperwork process. Most couples sign legally at home and keep the Saigon day symbolic. Check with your embassy if you want it to be legal here.
When to elope in Saigon
December to April is the best window. It is the dry season: clear mornings, low chance of rain, softer humidity in December and January. March and April get hot by late morning.
May to November is rainy season. Rain usually comes as a heavy shower in the afternoon, not all day. Mornings are often fine. If your dates fall in this period, plan everything before noon and have one indoor location as backup.
Avoid the week of Tết (Lunar New Year, 6 February 2027) unless you want the decorations. Many venues and cafés close for several days, and the weeks before Tết are the busiest of the year for photographers and makeup artists.
Plan the day around the light
Saigon is bright and hot by 9:00. The best photos happen early.
A simple timeline for a sunrise elopement:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 4:30–6:00 | Hair and makeup at your hotel (about 90 minutes for the bride) |
| 6:00–6:30 | Groom grooming, dress on, details shots |
| 6:30–8:30 | Ceremony and photos at the first location, soft light |
| 8:30–10:00 | Second location, or breakfast and an indoor spot |
| 10:00 | Done before the heat, back at the hotel |
Late afternoon works too (from about 16:00 to sunset), but in rainy season you take a risk. If you choose the afternoon, keep the morning free as a plan B.
Where couples shoot in Ho Chi Minh City
You do not need permits for casual photos in most public spaces, but your photographer will know the rules for each place. Ideas that work for two people:
- District 1 heritage streets: the Central Post Office area, Đồng Khởi street, old shophouse façades. Go early, it gets busy fast.
- The riverfront: the Saigon River at sunrise, with the city skyline behind you.
- Old apartment blocks and café buildings: colourful, very Saigon, good in light rain.
- Rooftop hotels: golden hour with the skyline. Book through the hotel.
- Green escapes: gardens and lanes outside the centre, or the Cần Giờ mangroves for a wilder look (about two hours each way, quoted separately).

What heat and humidity do to makeup, and what Kay does about it
Most elopement photos are outdoors, often in 30°C and high humidity. Makeup that looks perfect in an air-conditioned room can slide off in 40 minutes outside. Kay works for that from the start:
- Skin prep for humidity, thin layers, long-wear base
- Waterproof eye products, set brows, lashes that hold through tears
- Hair built for wind and humidity: secure updos, or soft waves set to last
- Blotting and touch-ups between locations, if Kay stays with you
If your ceremony includes a Vietnamese element, such as an áo dài for part of the day, Kay can change the hair between looks. For a family tea ceremony, see our tea ceremony hair and makeup guide.
Prices
All prices in VND, hair always included with makeup. Travel inside Ho Chi Minh City is included. USD is for reference only (about 26,000 VND = 1 USD).
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Bride makeup and hair, Kay finishes and leaves | 2,000,000 VND (~US$77) |
| Bride makeup and hair, Kay stays for the whole shoot and touches up on location | 3,500,000 VND (~US$135) |
| Groom makeup and hair | 1,200,000 VND (~US$46) |
| Each additional person, same session (friend, family) | from 1,800,000 VND (~US$70) |
| Trial before the day (optional) | 2,000,000 VND (~US$77) |
| Locations outside the city | Travel and stay quoted in full before you confirm |
Which one to choose: if your day has a ceremony and more than one location, choose the 3,500,000 option. In Saigon heat, touch-ups between locations make the biggest difference in the final photos. If you only need one hour of photos near your hotel, 2,000,000 is enough.
A deposit holds your date. The amount and change terms are confirmed in writing before you pay. Full price list: kinkay.vn/en/pricing.
Trial: do you need one?
Not always. Many couples arrive only a few days before. Kay can do the consultation over WhatsApp: send your dress, a few reference photos and your skin type, and she plans the look before you land. If you have a free day before the elopement and want to see the look first, book the trial.
