Pre-Wedding Photoshoot Makeup in Saigon
More couples now plan a pre-wedding or engagement shoot as part of a trip to Vietnam. Saigon gives you colonial streets, a river at sunset, old apartment blocks full of character and áo dài that photograph beautifully. What most couples underestimate is the part before the camera: hair and makeup that still looks right after three hours in the heat.
This guide is for couples flying into Ho Chi Minh City for a few days who want photos that look like them, not like a filter.
When to shoot
Saigon has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly from December to April. Skies are clearer, rain is rare and outdoor plans are safer. From May to November, afternoons often bring a short heavy shower.
For an outdoor pre-wedding shoot, plan around light, not the clock:
- Sunrise (around 05:30 to 07:30). Soft light, empty streets, cooler air. Makeup starts very early, so this suits couples who are already awake from jet lag.
- Late afternoon to sunset (around 15:30 to 18:00). Warm light, livelier streets, a good fit for the riverside and rooftops.
- Avoid 11:00 to 14:00 outdoors. Harsh overhead light and the hottest part of the day. If you must shoot then, choose indoor or shaded spots.
If you travel between May and November, keep a backup indoor location and leave one free day in your trip in case of rain.
Where couples usually shoot
You do not need a long list. Two or three locations close together give you variety without losing light in traffic.
- District 1 heritage streets around the Central Post Office and Đồng Khởi: classic, elegant, busy after 08:00.
- The Saigon riverside at sunset: open sky, city skyline behind you.
- Old apartment blocks and cafés in District 1 and District 3: colour, texture, a very local feel.
- Hotel suites and rooftops: private, air-conditioned, good for a second look in the evening.
Ask your photographer about permits and quiet hours. Some buildings and cafés charge a small fee or need a booking.
Hair and makeup that lasts outdoors
Saigon is humid. A look built for an air-conditioned studio will not survive a riverside walk. Here is what we plan for:
- Thin, long-wear base. Light layers that set well. Heavy coverage slides in heat and looks flat in daylight photos.
- Waterproof eyes and lashes. Sweat and a few happy tears should not move anything.
- Lips that can be refreshed fast. We choose a shade you can reapply yourself between locations.
- Hair that holds in wind and humidity. Soft updos and low buns last longer than loose waves. If you want waves, we set them stronger than usual.
- One look or two. Many couples start natural for daytime streets and switch to a deeper lip and sleeker hair for the evening. Plan the change at a location with a mirror and air conditioning.
For the partner, light grooming matters more than people think. A matte finish on the skin, tidy brows and neat hair stop shine and flyaways from pulling focus in close-ups.
What to tell your makeup artist before the day
Send this once and the morning goes smoothly:
- Shoot date, start time and the first location.
- Your outfits, with photos: wedding dress, áo dài, suit, casual looks.
- Two or three reference photos of looks you like, and one you do not.
- Your skin type and anything you react to.
- Whether you want one look or a change during the shoot.
- Where you are staying, so we can come to your hotel or apartment.
Sleep well the night before, drink water, skip a new skincare product that week, and arrive with a clean face.
How the session works with KINKAY
Kay comes to your hotel, apartment or studio in Ho Chi Minh City. Makeup and hair are always done together, about 90 to 120 minutes per person. Consultations are in English.
There are two ways to book:
- Kay prepares you, then leaves: 2,000,000 VND. Good for short shoots or one location.
- Kay stays with you for the whole shoot: 3,500,000 VND. Touch-ups between locations and help with a look change.
- Extra person in the same session: from 1,800,000 VND per person (a bridesmaid, a mother, a sister flying in with you).
- Makeup and hair for the groom or partner: 1,200,000 VND.
A deposit holds your date. The amount and change or cancellation terms are confirmed in writing before you transfer anything. Full prices are on our pricing page.
A simple timeline for a sunset shoot
- 13:00 Kay arrives, sets up near a window.
- 13:15 to 15:00 Makeup and hair for the bride. Partner grooming during the last 20 minutes.
- 15:30 First location, natural look.
- 17:00 Look change at the hotel or a café.
- 17:30 to 18:15 Riverside or rooftop for sunset.
Shift everything earlier by about eight hours for a sunrise shoot.
Pairing it with an áo dài session
Many visitors want at least a few frames in áo dài. If you do not have your own, our áo dài photoshoot package includes makeup, hair, a photographer and the dress option. You can book it as a separate morning so your pre-wedding day is not rushed.
Planning a wedding in Vietnam too?
If the pre-wedding shoot is part of a bigger plan, read our guide for Việt Kiều couples flying home to marry, or see bridal hair and makeup for the wedding day itself. Booking the same artist for the shoot and the wedding means the look on the day is already tested.
